Answer
first what version do you have? you can find this by clicking wii options then wii settings. Your system version is said on the top for example 4.2U or 3.1E. To play homebrew you need to hack your Wii. Here is the tutorial if you have version 4.2.

Now if you have version 3.1-4.1 follow this tutorial

Now download the homebrew and put the file in the apps folder of your SD card.

Is there a way to play Wii Virtual Console games without the classic controller?
Mike
I have the Homebrew Channel on Wii System Menu 3.2U if that makes a difference.
More specifically Nintendo 64 games
Answer
N64 games are the ones that tend to use everything on the Wii Classic Controller. However, you do have some alternatives here.
1) Use a Gamecube controller -- A good number of N64 games done full use the N64 controls. Therefore, you can likely get by with a Gamecube controller.
2) Get a Console-to-Wii adapter -- Innex is developing an adapter for the Wii which will allow you to use your original NES / SNES / N64 controllers with the Wii.
The adapter is NOT AVAILABLE UNTIL JULY, but it's an easy way to get around this for $20... See http://kotaku.com/5263758/use-your-n64-nes--snes-pads-on-the-wii for more information.
Retro Zone has single-console adapters (NES & SNES-to-Wii connectors) that work as well... but NO N64 adapters here (Sorry). Visit http://www.retrousb.com/index.php?cPath=22 for more info.
This is all the choices you have for now... I hope this helps!
