Me and a few friends have decided to build a video game. This game is for the PC. In the game you are starting a construction company. This is a VERY in depth game. It will be similar to 18 Wheels Of Steel and Farming Simulator You will have to purchase lumber operate heavy machinery and drive trucks not to mention that you have to design the houses for people. There is a lot more. Fortunately we don't have any deadlines or anything like that. This means we have the time to learn. The first problem is that I don't know what software to use to design the map. Two softwares that I have downloaded was UDK and Unity. I don't know if I can use these though because one of the features for the game is to dig up stuff. I don't know the first place to start setting that up. Next we have to design the vehicles, character's, and equipment. I was planning on using Zbrush. Is this a good software to use for this? Finally can I use notepad++ and use this software to build the backbone of the game? Thank you for all of the responses in advance.

Answer
First of all, is your game in 2D or 3D? Cause UDK and Unity and all those programs are 3D software, for making stuff in 3 Dimensions (X,Y,Z)
If its 2D, then those wouldnt help at all.

For "digging" youd (for the most part) have to break the ground up into either:
1. Tiles, and when they "dig" there actually deleting that tile exposing the tile beneath, until they reach whatever limit you set or until they fall through the ground and fall into empty space forever.

2. Painting, where you actually paint the ground around them, to a certain color, so it LOOKS like their "digging"

Video games are really hard to build though because (assuming you actually know how to program well, and you have all your software), you gotta keep in mind:
- Your gunna need a sound guy
- Your gunna need a music guy (sometimes sound guy also does music)
- Your gunna need a effects/animations guy
- Your gunna need a visuals/artwork guy
- Your gunna need a movie/cut scene guy (if you have that in your game)
- Your gunna need a functions guy(like for example: if your game has missions, your gunna need someone to do all of those, and someone else to do all the designs and speeds etc for cars, etc etc)
- And your gunna need a programmer guy

Then your gunna need a way to manage everything in the game, like a car database for every car in the game, a building database for every construction in the game, and so on and so on

Then it gets even more complicated if you decide to make this game online, like you can do something like start a union with other people around the world, or something

Then the programs ull need for each thing you gotta make sure you have, heres a list of a few programs I use (I use jr programs) to make games:

Photoshop - For my artwork/visuals
Flash - For my animations/effects (ie chr walking, dyeing, running, building, what have you)
Audacity then Cuebase - For my sounds
FL Studio 11 (and sometimes Ableton Live 9) - For my music
Then either one of the following - For my coding/function building:
-Eclipse
-CodeBlocks(not often)
-Visual Studio's Program Doc(I like their layout, then I convert the code to something else and import it to Eclipse or some other)
-Notepad++(rarely)
-Java's Ready(I like the style of coding in it)

Like I said, very basic, simple programs, really jr, not professional at all really.
And thats for 2D games

If your going into 3D, then your gunna need something like Blender, or Maya, UDK, Unity, etc...

Not trying to discourage you, I think its a awesome game idea you got, and if you got the skills and you and your team is up for the long challenge ahead, id say go for it.

You CAN technically use Notepad++ (in fact if you know exactly what your doing you could use a normal text document file), but I guess it all comes down to what you find the most useful and easiest to use.

In my opinion, the most powerful languages for making games for the computer would be Java, and/or C++, and/or C#, or a combination of all of them. Again, you'd have to know them well to make them effective for you though, and know how and what to import and all that, how to make your own libraries, etc...

Also PLAN! PLAN THE HELL OUT OF YOUR STUFF! PLAN EVERYTHING!
It will REALLY help you later on when your actually to the programming stage, plus your friends can use the planner you made for their section (for example, if one of your friends deals with all the artwork, you can make a planner for all the artwork that needs to be done, how it should look, etc...)
Then he can stay efficient.

Then your also gunna need to find a way to keep them on task, cause even when I program alone, if I dont have some sort of motivation after a while, I get bored and do something else, everyone does.

Thats all I got really... Good luck, and the best part of programming is having fun, so dont forget to have tons of that while your working :) In fact, thats how you get better games, if you have fun making it.

Also, you gotta consider (later on though) your external skills, like your team leadership, participation, etc, and how your gunna promote and sell/advertise this game, where and how your gunna upload it, so people can play and/or download it, etc...

Id take a few days to make up all your plans and blueprints, so you know exactly where your heading and how your gunna get there in detailed step by step, so you dont get lost down the road...

Anyway, hope I could help with something, provide some information, I know it was alot, but hopefully you could take something useful from it... Later.

Can anyone give me a link for a good driving sim game?

I like the non-racing games (like Bus Driver and 18 Wheels of Steel series and Taxi Driver) where you drive around in the virtual cities where there are even street lights and you have little missions (like pick up ____ here and drop them off here). I don't like racing or shooting or anything like that. Also, it needs to be compatible with a Windows XP. I like the demo games that you get to play for like an hour. Those are normally a lot better than online games. So basically I'm looking for a non-violent, non-competitive download virtual driving game.

p.s. I've already tried the 18 Wheels of Steel series, Taxi Driver, and Bus Driver (the last two did not run smoothly on my computer and did not work)
