Hi. Today I'm hearing a lot about this and it sounds fun. If I were to do this.....

1. Would I buy the games or download them?
2. Does it cost money to play them online?
3. If I can download the games, is it likely I'll get a virus?
4. Is it better than online gaming on other consoles?
5. Would I need to buy other equipment, ( joysticks or controllers)

I know I'm very unfamiliar with this stuff. So I appreciate the help.

There's different type of online games:

MMORPG(Massively multiplayer online role-playing game)
This kind of game is where you play your own character in a world of fantasy with other players. These kind of games are really addictive and require a lot of time.

FPS(First Person Shooter)
These are all the shooter(gun) games where you can play on servers online with other players. Very nice games for the casual type since its always fun to play whenever you have free time.

RTS(Real Time Strategy)
These are the types of game that you need to control many units at the same time and manage your resources and whatnot and that you can play on different servers with people and compete. Also really nice for a casual gamer.
