Looking into getting a Dragon Quest game... help?

ialwayswin

I really like RPGs and have recently become interested in the Dragon Quest series... Only I'm not too sure what to get! I have a Nintendo DS, and I'm debating between Hand of the Heavenly Bride or the new one..Sentennials of the Starry Skies? Anyways, I'm looking for a one-player game that will keep me playing for awhile. Which one? Will i be confused by the stories because I've never played DQ before?

Answer
All Dragon Quests games are stand alone games, though games that are numerically close to each other may be on the same world.

Heavenly Bride is the more rigid of the two games. The main character is predefined; you can't change him at all. After a while you get minor ability to control your party, but for the most part it is set. All characters have preset 'classes' which you cannot change. On the other hand, because your party is set your party members are characters with personalities all their own.

Starry Skies is a lot more free form. You design you character, male or female, and also design all your party members. Not only can you chose your class, but you can change it, and choose which abilities from those classes you want to learn. Sadly those party members have no personality, but you are accompanied by NPCs who do not fight, but are there to drive the story. The game also has a multiplayer feature that allows other people with the game to join you in your quest.

As far as length, Starry Skies is technically longer, but mostly due to a wealth of side quest. Unfortunately, i don't know how long their main quests are.

Video Games simular to Dragon Quest 8?

Sam

I am a big fan of RPG's and Dragon quest 8 is by far my favorite game. Some of the things I like about it include

1.Its cartoonish animation which isnt overly cartoonish.
2.Its comical tone.
3.A good sized open world to explore, which isnt too big and isnt too small.
4. I love the battle system.
5 There arent an abudant amount of skills that you will never use.
6.The customization is great with weapons and skills with out having too many weapons.
7. Just the point of view of the game and experience of running threw the cities.

the list just goes on. Another game that I really love is Paper mario and the Thousand Year Door which has many of the above characteristics.

I have also played Final fantasy 10, tales of Smphonia, Oblivion, Skyrim,Fallout 3, Okami and several other RPG games. These are good games but not nearly as good as Dragon Quest 8 imo.

So does anyone know of any games that are simular to D!8?

Answer
Well, the most similar game to Dragon Quest VIII is Dragon Quest IX for Nintendo DS (also playable on Nintendo 3DS). Try Final Fantasy X-2 (PS2), Suikoden III~V (PS2), Baten Kaitos (GameCube, 2 games), Blue Dragon (Xbox 360), the Wild Arms series (PS1 & PS2), Rouge Galaxy (PS2, this is from the same developer of DQ8, but the battles are not turn-based, more like Tales of Symphonia), Arc Rise Fantasia (Wii), Golden Sun: Dark Dawn (DS), and Grandia games on PS2. If you don't mind first-person view in battles, I highly suggest you play the other Dragon Quest games, especially DQ4, 5, and 6 on Nintendo DS/3DS.

Also, the same DQ8 developer will release a new PS3 game, probably going to be the best JRPG ever on PS3, it's called Ni No Kuni (will be released in Jan 2013 in USA/Europe, but it's already out in Japan/Asia). The gameplay is similar to DQ8.
