(1) world series. Team A and Team B play in a world series. The series continue until a team wins 4 games....?

emfresh

if team A has probability of winning a game against Team B, find the probability that team A wins.
a. (after 5 games). B. (after 6 games). C. (after 7 games). D (after 8 games).
e. find the probability that A wins the series.
F. find the probability that B wins the series

Answer
First note that the competition is best of 7 games as by then one of the teams has won four games so answer for part (d) is 0.

Let the probability that team A wins any individual game be p.
The probability that A wins 4 - 0 is p^4

Now consider that A wins 4 - 3. The first six games must be 3 - 3 in any order and then A wins the seventh game. The probability for this is
6C3*(p^3)*(1 - p)^4 * p = 20*(p^4)*(1 - p)^3

Can you do team A winning 4 - 1 and 4 - 2 in a similar way and sum the probabilities to finish part (e) ?

(f) P(B wins series) = 1 - P(A wins series)

Should baseball games be 1.5 hours like Part 2 of Game 5 in the World Series?

Just 3 innings of baseball erases most of the boring pitching switch delays and the batting delays and any other delay. Baseball is a very slow sports, so to make the game shorter would make it more interesting. I see the final game of the World Series as a prototype.

Answer
Baseball is fine with no time limit. TV has caused al ot of problems. At a Cardinals Sunday game this year they could not start the game because ESPN was still giving the starting line ups. Mike Shannon said the umpire was standing with his hand on his hips glaring ast the pressbox for the signal to start the game. Also they has to have at least 2 minutes between innings. It doesn't take that lose to changes positions and have the pitcher take his warm up throws. Its TV having to get in commercials. Also a lot of batters do not even leave the on deck circle until their name is announced. They should be on their way to the plate as soon as the previous play is over with, These a re just a few things that need to be changed to speed up the game.

How many times and when did the loser of game 1 win the World Series?

Gabriel

How many times did an MLB team win the World Series after losing game 1?

Answer
MLB has played 108 World Series.

The team winning Game 1 has gone on to win the title 68 times; the loser of Game 1 has won the title 40 times. (Caveat: we have to allow a bit of wiggle room for 1907, when Game 1 ended in a tie. The Cubs won Game 2, and went on to claim the championship, the first of two consecutive.)

Not gonna list all 40, but here's the last ten times the G1 losing team hoisted the trophy:

2009 Yankees
2002 Angels
1996 Yankees
1993 Blue Jays
1986 Mets
1985 Royals
1983 Orioles
1982 Cardinals
1981 Dodgers
1979 Pirates

9 game world series?

Brendan

Did anyone here about this idea?

I saw it on ESPN, do you think that a 9 game world series is a good idea, or just too long?

Answer
7 games is plenty to decide who the better team is. The reason why they want 9 games is to play 2 on a neutral site and make some more money. I think its a dumb idea the 2 extra games are going to be meaningless cause its the start of the series. I bet more people tune in to game 7 (when the series goes that far) than any other game in the series. They want to rival the Super Bowl hype but the reason why the Super Bowl is so big is because its 1 game winner take all. I think baseball's championship is just fine the way it is without money hungry entrepenuers looking to make yet another extra buck.

Game 1 of the World Series is looking as though it would go that way if it weren't for the fact that both managers likely want to save their aces for games 4 and 7, so I was curious when the last time both starting pitchers pitched a complete game in a game.

Answer
I'm not sure

How many have gone to a Playoff game/ World Series game in person?

Scooter_Th

Have gone to 2 first Round games 4 ALCS Games( 2 of them when they won the AL Pennant) 1 NLCS & 1 World Series.

Answer
I went to Games 3,4, and 5 of the 1969 and 1973 World Series, games 1,2,6, and 7 of the 1986 World Series, and Game 4 of the 2000 World Series. I also went to Game 4 of the 1955 World Series at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn.

I went to all the home games in the 1969, 1973, 1986, 1988, 1999, 2000 and 2006 NLCS, and all the home games in the 1999, 2000 and 2006 NLDS.
