Should I learn how to make my own game editor?

Daniel

I've been getting into entry level game development (using C# and the XNA game studio) and have been coding the various positions of objects and assets. I would figure that to make a more complicated/larger game it might be a pain to continue to code the existence of various objects. Am I right to assume that most larger game developers use an editor? Whether they create the editor themselves or buy one and edit it to their needs?

If I should learn about making a game editor, does anybody know where I might find resources about this? Mainly using C# and possibly even XNA?
So you would think that I do not need to learn how to create my own? At least for entry level games?

Answer
You're right, most large game development industries would build games that are based on their own engine (not necessarily an editor) and existing solutions. This is where coding design methodologies become important. The idea is to make your code more pluggable so that you can speed up the development process. For instance, you can get to that familiar part of the process and say, "for this stage of the project, I can plug in that piece of code that I developed years ago".

If you're making an editor for XNA you should already be very comfortable with the framework. But there are already some editors available for XNA (most are not so good). When I was working on XNA projects the Ox Game Engine was the talk of the forums. I did a little work with it but I found the learning curve to be quite steep and overall I found I was quicker coding by hand. It has since become the Xi Engine and you can find out more at http://xigameengine.codeplex.com/

Have a look at http://xigameengine.codeplex.com/ where the guys are discussing some newer editors (havn't checked out these editors myself but I'm intrigued now).

But no, for entry level games you don't need to create your own editor. Build your game and you'll learn some tricks along the way. Your next game will be more complex or better built and you'll soon have developed a system of your own that works.

What is a good free game editor to create 3-D games?

Likewise, what is a good 3D map editor to use in conjunction with this game editor?

I've looked at quite a few different options, and I'm still open to new environments. I've currently looked at Sauerbraten, Irrlitch + IrrEdit, Dark Basic, Gensis3D, and Reality Factory. However, none of these programs seems to be exactly what I'm looking for. I want something that enables easy to make maps (like Sauerbraten) but with the flexibility of something like Dark Basic. Any ideas? Please post links.

Answer
Are you looking for an editor or an engine?

For an engine, I think Ogre3D looks alright and has many useful utilities (though I've never actually used it before).

For an editor, I think it depends on the game you want to make. For example, if you want to make a FPS, there is FPS Creator, there is also the Source Engine and many others. The Elder's Scrolls games also have good editors with them. They are not FREE, but you get them with the game, which is as good as free.

Does any body have a tutorial for Gamemaker to make a game editor create more than one level & compile them ?

Easyh

Hello I was wondering if any body has a tutorial or an example that explains how to make the game editor -game editor created by Gamemaker- to create more than one level and compile them to an exe file.
Thank you.

Answer
Create Multiple Rooms and then from your player object create for example a collision event with a solid object ( the object has to be unique) and then put in a "go to next room" event. When you make the EXE. file (File-->make executable) the levels will work

Does the in-built creature editor in just the Spore game look the same as the Creature Creator editor?

Does the in-game editor in Spore (without the Creature Creator installed) look the same as it does with the Creature Creator installed?

Answer
Yes! The Creature Creator is the exact same one. The good thing is though that there is an expansion that let's you add a couple of different parts plus new color palettes. The game also has editors for cells, cars, ships, houses, entertainment centers, factories, air vehicles and spaceships PLUS you can change color of planets and add mountains and hills and a bunch of stuff.
