I want to know if my boyfriend is online playing counter strike right now. Problem is, i dont own the game.
Is there any official site for counter strike that lists the players currently online?
Or is there any way i can find out?

Some servers are set up with such a feature, but that's a server-by-server thing with no central location to go to. For instance, the place I hang out puts info on their website's front page that lists info on their main pub server, including what map is running now, what players are connected, and how many kills each connected player has on that map so far. But it doesn't show anything about their 3 other pub servers.
There's also an IM program called XFire that you can configure to know every game installed on a computer and will show that to anyone on the firend list.
Also, in the case of CounterStrike and any other program connected to Steam, you could download Steam (free) and add each other to your friend lists in there. Then it would show him online and playing when he is. But that would require cooperation from him, which won't help you at this point, much like XFire.

i play games online and want to update my desktop pc to make the games run better what should i buy?

i regularly play games online like cov, wow, counter strike etc, but i find i tend to crash alot and the running speed of the whole games are slowing down alot. i had my pc hand built by a friend but he has moved away and im not 100% sure of what components i need to buy eg graphics card and so on can any1 recommend anything?

Go to 'Start' button at lower left of screen, and click on it. Go to 'Run...' and type in 'dxdiag' (without quotation marks). This will give you all the information you need about your computer. If the games are crashing or slowing down when previously they were working fine, then it may just be that your computer needs 'tweaking', which is a hell of a lot cheaper than buying upgrades.
Try a few things first before chucking out your machine:
Download CleanUp! (free)
Download RegistryCleaner (free)
Download Adaware (free)
Run each of these programs to get rid of all the unnecessary crap from your machine - you'll be amazed by how much these simple tools can speed everything up.
If you just want a better machine, then let me know what your 'specs' are (from the dxdiag) and I'll let you know what hardware will give you the biggest bang for your buck.
