if a game is made for a windows 98 computer, would it work on a windows xp computer?

There are games that would work under windows xp, but you might have to do as follows.
Open the game and go the the setup of the game. Right click on it and then go to properties. There you choose Compatility.
There you see compatitility mode
Select exercise in this compatitility mode
Choose Windows 98/Windows ME
Apply
Now your game should work in Windows XP

Ok, now before you start telling me to upgrade my OS, i should say that i am at my Grandmothers for a few days With only my Ancient IBM ThinkPad, running off of the neighbors wifi with Windows 98 installed, i have tryed many different operating systems on this laptop, and honestly 98 is the only one that doesnt lag the thing to absolute shit.
That being said, dont give me the "UPGRADE UR OS RETARD" rant.
now, sense i am at my grandmother's for the next few days, i WILL be bored, and i need some games to play.
Also, i am not going to list my Specs, because honestly, im too fucking lazy.
Ok, now to the whole gaming thing:
I managed to get an old version of Firefox, but cant get an old version of Java, so java games are out of the question. (as much as im craving runescape right now, seriously, that bored.) 0_o
OK, so ill finish up by saying, if it can run on windows 98, has very very very very low requirements, and is under like lets say, 1.5gb, saying that this horrible attempt at a PC, I WILLL PLAY IT.

Um. What kind of games do you like? Check out a site like http://www.abandonwaredos.com or http://www.abandonia.com/ and then download DosBox. Hundreds of free games, many of them quite good.
If you like strategy, try out Master of Orion II. If you FPS, check out Doom or Duke Nukem. RPGs? Get Bard's Tale or Ultima VII. There's a ton of options.
I have no idea what genre it is, but Q*Bert is still fun to this day - kind of like how pac-man is still addictive.
They might look silly now, but I guarantee you that a lot of them still can make the hours vanish.
