I'm reading E.M. Forster's novel, "Maurice," and Scudder, his young love, is given the occupation of an under game guardian. Can anyone tell me what this is?

Warzone - 2 teams of five, the standard 'deathmatch' game.
Execution - 2 teams, each player has only 1 life, to get a kill the player must use an execution move (curbstomp, Y or B when down, basically you just can't shoot them to death)
Horde - Team of up to 5 players take on waves of locust, there are 50 waves split into 5 sets of 10 and the enemy gets tougher after every set.
Wingman - 5 teams of 2 players, the key is to help each other survive while killing opponents.
Annex - 2 teams of 5, you must gain a set area and protect it from the enemy for a set amount of time
Submission - 2 teams of 5 and one 'survivor'. You must capture the survivor and take him to your designated area, holding him there for a certain amount of time to win the round
Guardian - 2 teams of 5, each team has 1 designated leader. While the leader is alive the team can respawn. Once he is dead this ability is lost and the round is won by killing all members of the opposite team.
